This article very much opened my eyes to the reality of violence in our country today. Much would i love to tell you that i have always felt safe in public schools, but that's not always the case. When i lived in Litchfield, there was a school shooting at a school half-an-hour away from ours(Rocori-Cold Spring Shootings). It caused everyone in the state to stop & recognize what a problem we have as a society to not notice the warning signals of a person that needs help. As i was reading on in the article, i read that the United States has more gun violence that other countries. That was a shocker to me at first, but when i thought about it, you can pretty much but a gun anywhere (THANKS NRA!). I mean how long can you argue the second amendment while so many people are being killed? Reading the rest of the article, i read how all of the surrounding countries have put a ban on most guns, and death rates are at all time lows. Gopnik said it perfectly. He states, "Rural American is hunting country, and hunters need rifles and shotguns--with proper licensing, we'll live with the risk" (Gopnick pg 2).
with peace & love

I completely agree! I hate it when people use the 2nd amendment as an excuse to carry a gun around when they really have no need! It's embarrassing that our country hasn't done enough about this issue, and people are still getting killed everyday because of it.
ReplyDeleteKarin I agree with everything you've said! I think that stricter gun laws haven't been passed because of George W. Bush being in office for the past 8 years. Usually Republicans want to have more open gun laws while Democrats want stricter gun control. Hopefully with Obama in office now he will make some changes and our country will see a decline in unnecessary fatalities!
ReplyDeleteKarin, to play devil's advocate to your comments I pose the following question: How, specifically, will stricter gun control litigation reduce violence in our country? Those of us who respect the law and happen to own guns tend to be responsible owners of firearms--meaning, ones who do not create unnecessary violence in the world. In contrast, those of us who do not respect the law and happen to "own" guns often own them illegally and use them for, let's say, questionable purposes. So again I ask you: how will stricter gun control litigation reduce violence in our country? How will further limiting the rights of responsible, law-abiding citizens to own firearms help when these same limitations will only push the lawless citizens to purchase (or steal) unregistered guns on the black market in further pursuit of their questionable purposes?
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about how long people can argue the second ammendment. For that matter, how long will they argue in general? We can't wait for another massacre, we need to take action now.
