what scares me...so please don't laugh (:

While i watch the people to the left and right of me typing about all the things that make them scared (bees, bugs, spiders, snakes, etc.), i always say to myself, "Karin, you have to man up and just type it already." Well here i go.

When i was but a wee 5 year old, i was obsessive over gymnastics. I loved going on the rings and doing jumps into the huge pit of foam cubes. Until the worst day of my life. I gripped on the huge twisted rope with all of my life and swung. When i dropped into the enormous pit of cubes, i realized that i was swimming in the nastiest, grossest feeling of my life. I took a cube in my hand and noticed that i was about to throw-up. Little did i know, i looked around me and i was plopped in the middle of this pit of doom. I started to panic. Foam on my left, foam on my right, foam EVERYWHERE. i tried to climb out of the pit, but the hellish hands of the pit were reaching and holding me in.

i got out...finally. That feeling will never, EVER creep up into this body of mine.

I HAVE A PHOBIA. Yes, not just a fear; a deathly phobia. We tend to call it "foam phobia".
I've grown up with two brothers (younger & older) and whenever we would want to jump from the top landing of stairs to the basement, i would always get a garbage basket to set at the bottom of the stairs so i could hurl. We would set the matress foam at the bottom of the stairs and jump. In my case the order went the following: cry, jump, vomit & start all over again!

I hope you have enjoyed reading my blog on my phobia. While all of you are swatting at your bees, and skinning your snakes in revenge, i'm down here waiting with my wastebasket (:

with peace & love (:

  1. It looks like both of us have irrational fears! I could totally understand how that would freak you out after your experience. Is it like the texture of the foam or something? Hmm. Well now I know to never have foam around you the next time we hang out! :)

  2. I hate that screaching sound when styrofoam rubs together so I can relate somewhat. I'm sorry you have a phobia, but why in the world would you jump down the stairs with your brothers if you're so scared of it!?!!

  3. Oh my gosh! I used to love gymnastics as well and time after time had to jump into that giant, extrememly nasty foam pit. It's not like the employees could ever even clean that! Not to mention it's a disgusting feeling, foam. Ick :(

  5. I love your fear!! This is kind of funny Karin, not going to lie, but I do know what your talking about in saying that foam does feel pretty weird and kind of irritating. It just kind of makes you feel skratchy all over, I don't even know. Have I made you throw up yet?

  6. Your fear is weird, but I like it. You, at least, have a reason for not liking foam whereas most people who are scared of snakes or sharks have never actually had an experience with one.
Personally, I hate the sound that cotton balls make. (You probably think that they don't make any noise, but they do! Rub one between your fingers next to your ear!) That sound makes me shiver. . .

  7. THAT'S AWESOME!! It's strange how you went from loving jumping into the foam, to hating it.
I did laugh a little. It's a bit funny to picture someone doing that.
As far as the writing goes, this post was really good. It would actually make a great narrative if you added to it a bit.
"While all of you are swatting at your bees, and skinning your snakes in revenge, i'm down here waiting with my wastebasket."--great line!

  8. Woah. This, unlike some of the other ones I've read, actually makes sense. I can agree with most of what andrew said about this. I hate that styrofoam noise too though, it's freaky stuff that you shouldn't mess with.

  9. Mmk, Karin. I think it would be best if I just read your blog and walk away without talking about it...it's very...interesting.
